Puerto Varas

Now in Puerto Varas, a charming lake town in southern Chile, just north of Patagonia.  Very heavy German influence in the pastries and architecture.  They had a wild fire near by several days ago and you can still get a whiff of the smoke and it's a little smoggy.  Today is clear and beautiful otherwise and in the 60s! Totally different from southern Patagonia. Lots of cool looking restaurants and little shops.  It would remind you of a less kitchy Leavenworth.  The woman who met our flight in Puerto Montt had been to Pt. Townsend and loved it.  Small world.  I had a traditional Chilean dish last night of muscles, clams and smoked ribs all in a bowl with a light broth.  Weird but delicious.  This morning's breakfast was the usual fruit, yogurt, scrambled eggs, cold cuts, cheese and a host of delicious German style pastries.  Today, we tour the area.
