On the Mighty Mekonga

Mekong sunrise

After a 45 minute flight from Siem Reap, we arrived in Phnom Penh.  Riding though the city on a motor coach, I was impressed by the number of vehicles.  Mostly Toyotas for cars, but again, the innumerable motor bikes and all varieties of tuk-tuks as well as little covered bike=truck hybrids.  We arrived at the boat, which is lovely. We are down to 18 passengers only as one of the girls we were with, her fiancé died suddenly in the states and she and her whole family of 4 went back.  The ship holds 36, so we have lots of room and attention from the staff.  The room is huge by cruise ship standards.  Soft drinks, juices, coffee, beer and “local spirits” are available all day everywhere with wine at lunch and dinner only.  Dean is learning to love the local gin.  Uh oh!
Our guide gave a fascinating talk on the geography of Cambodia.  He peppers his talks with “Oh my Buddha!” which we have all adopted.
The food is great.  The Cambodians have a soup similar to pho with their wonderful skinny rice noodles and another that has a coconut milk based broth with the noodles, meat and veggies.  I could eat soup all day!  This morning they have coffee and sweet rolls for the early risers and tai chi.
